Subject Areas
The following subjects are all taught by a homeroom teacher.

English Language: Students develop the basic skills of reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and phonics. Literacy is a particular focus for elementary children at the Academy. Students are exposed to the latest educational practices in balanced literacy based on current research and best international practices. Developmental continuums are used to monitor their progress in reading and writing and to ensure that instruction is differentiated for each child.

Mathematics: Mathematics actively engages students in problem-solving and works toward developing a conceptual understanding of the basic principles of mathematics.

Social studies: Our social studies program assists each student in understanding the historical and geographic influences that have shaped and continue to shape the human experience.

Science: The science program is hands-on and exploratory with an emphasis on experimentation and a growing understanding of the scientific method.

Art: Students explore and experiment with a variety of mediums studied from many different cultures.

Information Technology: All teachers strive to integrate IT into subject areas, and use technology to enhance their students’ learning experience.

The following subjects are taught by specialist teachers:

French: French is taught from Grade 1 to Grade 6. Classes are structured using the four main language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and are applied in practice through songs, texts, audio, images, games and group activities.

Music: Students study the language of music from different cultures and practise and develop their basic skills with instruments and vocals.

Physical Education: Students will learn and practice a full range of physical skills through a variety of activities.

Dance: Students learn about different styles of dance and practice and develop a range of skills and movement.

English as a second language (ESL): Students for whom English is an additional language are given a fluency assessment when they join the school. Those with a lower level of proficiency in English are given intensive English classes timetables during the school day.

Albanian: These classes are compulsory for native Albanian students and optional for all other students. They take place immediately after school and help develop students’ proficiency in the key areas of speaking, writing, reading and listening.
